Before I first moved to Los Angeles in October 2009, I thought it would be a good idea to get to know my new city better before settling in. And so, after exchanging texts, emails and a couple drunken IMs, it was time to meet in-person. Armed with nothing more than a Flip camera, a pair over-sized sunglasses and a 20 oz. bottle of Diet Coke, I embarked on a walking tour of my new zip code. (By “walking tour,” I really mean “I drove around in my Toyota Matrix because, hell, who am I kidding? Nobody walks in L.A. Right, Terry Bozzio?”)
With so many havens and hoods to choose from, I thought it would be a good idea to start with three of the hot-spots outlined in my book Wish You Were Here: An Essential Guide To Your Favorite Music Scenes—From Punk To Indie And Everything In Between. Enjoy!
